Ein junger Amerikaner names Jonathan Safran Foer bereist die Ukraine um mehr über den Verbleib des Mädchens zu erfahren, dass einst seinen Großvater rettete. Seine Reisegefährten sind ein Fahrer, der überzeugt davon ist blind zu sein, sein Enkel Alex, der dolmetschen soll, aber (zumindest zu Beginn) kaum Englisch versteht, und Sammy Davis jr. jr., eine ständig furzende Blindenhündin, die aber eigentlich keine Blindenhündin ist, sondern einfach eine ehemalige Bewohnerin des Heims für verrückte Hunde.

Ein Buch voller sperriger und verwirrender Abschnitte, aber auch voller Poesie und genial-absurder Episoden. Ich habe viele Stellen übersprungen, empfehle dieses dennoch jedem wärmstens. Häufig kritisiert wurde die deutsche Übersetzung, in der Alex´schräges Englisch etwas merkwürdig klingt. Möglicherweise ist das englische Original besser zu lesen.

Neuromancer

So wie Tolkien als der Urvater des Fantasy-Genres gilt, so gilt Gibson als Begründer des Cyberpunk-Genres und hat mit seinen SciFi-Romanen die Vorstellungen und Begrifflichkeiten des Cyberspace geprägt. Doch leider ist dieser Klassiker stilistisch und erzählerisch nícht besonders aufregend, sodass man sich die Lektüre auch sparen kann. Als Schwimmbad-Buch aber in Ordnung.

Falsche Opfer

Arne Dahl: Falsche Opfer ( Amazon )

Ein schwedischer Krimi im Fahrwasser von Henning Mankell: Die konstruierte Handlung beruht auf zu vielen Zufällen und wirkt unglaubwürdig, die Protagonisten erreichen schon aufgrund ihrer hohen Anzahl kaum Lebendigkeit und bleiben Stereotype. Zahlreiche arg hölzerne Metaphern und Vergleiche sind wohl nicht allein der Übersetzung in die Schuhe zu schieben.

Minette Walters: The Tinder Box ( Amazon )

A short treatise on the power of prejudices, a similar theme can be found in Minette Walters' Acid Row. At times the resulting story seems over-constructed but the ending nonetheless offers some nice suprises and turnarounds.

Sputnik Sweetheart

Haruki Murakami: Sputnik Sweetheart ( Amazon )

A typical menage a trois-story by Murakami: the narrator is in love with his best friend Sumire, an eccentric girl that likes to phone him up in the middle of the night. Sumire in turn loses her heart to beautiful Miu, an older woman who is unable to act out her feelings of love due to a strange experience in her youth. During a businees trip to Greece together with Miu Sumire suddenly disappears.

The first part of the book—the vividly scetched protagonists and the narrative style—gripped me but the story lost some impact towards the ending. Not my favourite book by Murakami.

Sun Tsu wrote The Art of War, a classic Taoist treatise on warfare ca. 500 BC. In later centuries other writers added comments to his work. Modern psychology and manager guidebooks stress the universal approach and the adaptability of his theories to todays business world. Fortunately I am not the CEO of a large corporation in feud with another large corperation and thus cannot verify this. But I guess some people in Washington should have consulted the book before starting a war in Iraq:

No ruler should put troops into the field merely to gratify his own spleen; no general should fight a battle simply out of pique. Anger may in time change to gladness; vexation may be succeeded by content. But a kingdom that has once been destroyed can never come again into being; nor can the dead ever be brought back to life.

Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.

Ein witziger, absurder und spannender Roman mit Liebe zu seinen Figuren und zur baskischen Küche.

The piano tuner Edgar Drake is sent to 19th-century British Burma by the War Office to tune a rare Erard piano. The piano belongs to the eccentric Surgeon-Major Anthony Carroll whose services although unconventional and non-militaristic have proven to be invaluable to the Empire.

Daniel Mason very vividly depicts Edgar Drake's dream-like journey at the end of which, in the remote fort of Mae Lwin—enchanted by Caroll's mistress Khin Myo and the beauty of the place—he finds himself not wanting to leave and return to wife and London. A gripping and poetic book garnished with details about piano tuning and Burmese culture.
